Shirtless Dean Tutorial
14th-May-2007 11:55 pm
Name - Steeeve
* Someone asked how I made this icon and I decided to make a quick tut for them and everyone else.
* I use PSP9, but it's mostly likely translatable in all versions and PS, but I don't know for sure.

From this: to this:

1) Crop

2) Color Balance layer: 20,0,-20

3) Curves layer: Input 50, Output 150; set to Soft Light

4) Brightness/Contrast Layer: 30,15; set to Normal

5) Merge all and sharpen

6) Duplicate base and set to Soft Light.

6a) In the Soft Light Layer, go to Enhance Photo and click Automatic Contrast Enhancement. Set the Bias to Darker, Strength to Normal, and Appearance to Bold.

6b) Also in the Soft Light Layer, go to Enhance Photo again and click Clarify and set the Strength to 5.

7) Overlay the texture and set to Soft Layer at 50%.

8) Merge all and you're done.

Let me know what y'all think about it!! Also if you have any questions, ask away!

Aww, stop it you're making me blush...LOL! Well I'm not as good as you yet, but I try.

XD ur coloring alone is like guh *points to ur icon*

I had to develop a way to lighten the icons, b/c SPN icons are so dark and all the tuts for them had SC. So the lightening technique I came up with helps with the coloring and then the soft light layer helps with the depth.

And thanks for another compliment sweetie, it really means a lot to me coming from you!!

I know lol they're always so dark it's hard to make a decent icon. Yeah SC is such a pain. :)

Aw, it's my pleasure.

15th-May-2007 07:47 am (UTC)
LOL! Well here is the original picture, which was capped my the fabulous marishna. And I don't mind if you practice using the original pic, but please don't repost the same exact icon.
15th-May-2007 08:09 am (UTC)

15th-May-2007 08:34 am (UTC)
I didn't crop it that much. The original pic was a great pic before hand so I didn't have to crop that much.

Hey nice tutorial.
I'm new to all this and was wondering what you mean by a curves layer or color layer? I know what layers are and I know what curves are ...so in relation to this I suppose I am asking are you creating a duplicate layer and doing the effect and then reducing the opacity? So that the orginal creeps through the and is lightly dusted by the new layer?

thanks for any help.

ignore me trail and error discovered the answer :)
15th-May-2007 01:24 pm (UTC)
No problem, I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've asked question and then figured out the question...LOL! Anyway, I'm glad you like the tut, and I hope it's useful!

very nice.
i have a question though, this has always stumped me when it comes to psp9
i know i sound kind of foolish, but...
how do you add textures to images? and then set them to blend modes?
7th-Jun-2007 12:31 am (UTC)
Just copy the image/texture and then paste (ctrl+L) it onto the image you want to use it on. Then, there's a little drop down menu that says 'Normal', select that and just choose the blend mode you want to use. Hope this helps, if you're still confused just let me know and I'll try to help you out!

thank you so much!
19th-Jun-2007 03:16 am (UTC)
very nice.

But everytime I try to copy the texture layer and add it to photo shop the layer added is just plain black. No texture. any idea?
19th-Jun-2007 09:25 pm (UTC)
The texture is just the lines, and the spaces in between are invisible, so just make sure that you select the lines. Hope that helps!

NP, just glad I could be helpful!
